What is the AI Skills Jam for K-12 Educators?

OpenAI Academy is hosting a summer series of hands-on AI Jams designed to help K-12 teachers and administrators learn practical ways to use ChatGPT and Codex in their day-to-day work, from lesson planning and parent communication to resource creation, differentiation, and administrative tasks.

In partnership with the Walton Family Foundation, Jams will happen across the summer in collaboration with school districts and education partners, with each hub scheduled around local school calendars. We’re proud to partner with district leaders from Illinois to Virginia to California.

K-12 teachers and staff will spend the day learning together with OpenAI mentors, district partners, and peers. By the end of the Jam, you'll walk away with at least one ready-to-use AI workflow you can adapt for your classroom.

Why attend?

  1. Hands-on results: You'll design and test an AI workflow that supports your teaching needs, like lesson planning, classroom materials, parent communication or student support.
  2. Beginners welcome: No coding or technical background required. Participants will get a guided introduction to ChatGPT and Codex with optional pre-Jam learning resources available through OpenAI Academy.
  3. Built for teachers and admin: The Jam starts from classroom workflows, not abstract AI concepts. You'll focus on work you already do and explore ways AI can save time or expand what's possible.
  4. Learn from mentors and peers: Get support from trained OpenAI facilitators and mentors, and learn alongside other educators in your region.
  5. Free to participate: Registration is free. Seats are limited and confirmed on a rolling basis.

"Good teaching is still good teaching. AI just changes the tools." - Casey Cuny, California's 2024 Teacher of the Year

Who should attend?

The Jam is designed for K-12 educators, teachers, admin, and staff early in their AI journey, curious about AI, and want practical, supported time to try it in a trusted environment. No coding or technical background required.

Seats are limited and filled on a rolling basis. Confirmed participants will receive event details by email.

Educators unable to attend in person can access free learning resources through OpenAI Academy, including follow-up virtual programming planned around back-to-school.

How It Works

  1. Before Your Jam: Participants have the option to engage with quick virtual, on-demand resources that introduce ChatGPT, show relevant examples, and help you get your accounts ready before the event.
  2. On Jam Day: Start with a guided introduction to ChatGPT and practical educator workflows. Then work with mentors and peers to build your own classroom-ready AI workflow. We’ll also include introductory Codex training and some hubs may have optional add-on programming.
  3. After Jam Day: Keep learning with educator-specific resources on OpenAI Academy and follow-up virtual sessions for participants and educators who could not attend in person.
