Leverage projects for organization of your ChatGPT work, now with project-only memory

Projects

What are projects?

Projects are smart workspaces that keep everything related to a long‑running effort in one place. Group together chats, upload reference files, and add custom instructions so ChatGPT remembers what matters and stays on‑topic. With memory, context, and flexible tools, they’re ideal for repeated and evolving work.

Why it’s useful at work

  • Group related conversations, documents, and notes in one place.
  • Customize each Project for your role with clear instructions, such as “always answer in executive-ready bullet points.”
  • Start Projects for team meetings, quarterly planning, ongoing engagements, research, writing and big ideas.

Please note that recordings may show a different or previous version of the ChatGPT UI

Using Projects in a workflow

Getting started

  1. Click the “+” icon and name your Project (e.g. Q2 Planning).

  1. Set specific instructions for formatting or preferred tone.
  1. Move existing chats into your Project and upload relevant files.
Whenever you're working with ChatGPT for that particular topic, go back to the project for the better, higher context responses.

Project-only memory

When you choose project-only memory during project creation:
  • Chats can reference other conversations within the same project
  • Chats cannot reference conversations outside the project (such as general ChatGPT or from a different project)

Note: To use project‑only memory, enable Reference saved memories and Reference chat history in your personal settings. Additionally, It’s available only for ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Business users when Memory is enabled at the workspace level.

Examples for when to use project-only memory:

  • Scenarios where memory containment and context clarity are essential. For example, if you write weekly business reports, you can use a project as the place to store and query datasets on an ongoing basis. With project-only memory, ChatGPT’s context is only ever about that particular reporting workstream, and your feedback and decisions around it.
  • Long-running work, like client accounts or monthly reporting.
  • Sensitive projects, such as stealth project planning or employee reviews, where users don’t want cross-contamination with other chats.
