ChatGPT For Visual Storytelling

OpenAI Academy is hosting ChatGPT for Visual Storytelling, a virtual conversation between Tim Meko and Evan Hirsch of OpenAI, designed for journalists, graphics reporters, designers, editors, and newsroom teams looking to think more deeply about AI’s role in visual storytelling.

The session will explore practical ways to use ChatGPT across the visual journalism workflow—whether you are an experienced data journalist or just getting started. Tim and Evan will discuss how AI can help surface visual story opportunities, structure messy information, explore chart and map concepts, identify useful comparisons, sharpen visual framing, and turn dense reporting into clear, audience-friendly storytelling. Attendees will leave with examples and approaches they can adapt to their own newsroom work, regardless of technical background.

Tim Meko brings nearly 20 years of experience in visual journalism and cartography, including a decade at The Washington Post leading teams behind award-winning maps, data visualizations, and explanatory graphics. His work contributed to multiple Pulitzer-winning packages, and he now works on OpenAI’s Intelligence and Investigations team, using data visualization to turn complex findings into visual narratives leaders can understand and act on.

Evan Hirsch helps lead OpenAI’s AI adoption efforts for journalism, working with newsroom leaders on training, partnerships, and practical workflows. Before joining OpenAI, he spent more than two decades in broadcast journalism, most recently as a Senior Producer at NBC News, with previous editorial roles at MSNBC and CBS News.
