Codex voice mode gave Jeremy Rose a different way to work after his repetitive stress injury caused debilitating pain in his upper body. He first felt the pain in his late teens while studying computer science in college. He saw a physiotherapist and was told he should not use computers so much. That advice was almost impossible to follow. Computers were already central to his studies, friendships, hobbies, and identity: he studied computer science, played video games, wrote software for fun, and used computers to talk with friends.
The pain has followed him for more than 20 years, across long stretches of 10-plus hours a day at a keyboard. It affects his shoulders, hands, and upper body, flares under stress, and can last from a week to a month. The hard part was not only that using a computer hurt. It was that pain and stress fed each other. When Jeremy was stressed, the injury flared; when the injury flared, he was cut off from the computer-based work and hobbies that helped him unwind. He learned coping strategies: changing keyboards, changing posture, standing instead of sitting, shifting from one side of his body to the other. But that often just moved the strain around. His right side would improve as his left side started to hurt.
Then came Codexâs voice mode. Dictation software has existed for years, but traditional dictation was not built for programming. It could handle English, but not the symbols, file navigation, functions, and precise edits that coding requires. With Codex, Jeremy can speak at a higher level and let the model turn an idea into useful software. He still uses a mouse and keyboard when he needs to, but far less. He can ask Codex to show him a function, scan the response visually instead of listening to code aloud, and then tell the model what to change: there is a bug here, expand this function for another case, what happens if the user is locked out?
That mixed voice and visual mode matters because audio output is hard to scan. Visual output lets Jeremy skim, jump around, and return to the part he needs. He works on the Codex app, has been involved with Codex since its early predecessors, and contributed a lot to the Codex CLI, so he uses Codex for ordinary engineering work too: debugging from logs, reasoning through missing cases, and building software.
In his personal life, he has set up recurring Codex jobs that sort tax-deductible receipts from his email and scan for property listings that match specific criteria, including permitting details and time on market. Living with less pain also means heâs got more energy for his two kids, ages three and five. But the voice story changed his sense of the future. Jeremy had assumed that as his body aged, his ability to type might simply run out. Using a computer with his voice extends the span of years when that work still feels possible.
