The OpenAI Academy for News Organizations is a learning community for editorial, business, product, and technology teams. Day 1

Over the past two years, the Lenfest Institute's AI Collaborative and Fellowship Program has embedded 11 AI engineers within news organizations to develop and scale solutions that support their journalism, engage audiences, grow revenue, and improve operational challenges.

In this one-hour conversation, leaders from 

 and fellows from participating organizations – 

 Boston Globe Media Partners, Chicago Public MEdia, NEWSWELL 

– will share what they learned about moving from early experimentation to tools and workflows that teams use in practice. The discussion will explore how fellows identified the right problems to solve, built trust across their organizations, established responsible guardrails, and helped colleagues adopt and expand upon their work.

Panelists will also discuss projects developed through the fellowship. From archival search and public-meeting monitoring to translation, transcription, audience engagement, and revenue tools – and offer practical guidance for other news organizations considering how to prioritize and embed AI expertise.
