- OpenAI trains large language models, which are AI systems that consume massive amounts of text and data to learn human language over time
- ChatGPT is an application built on these large language models that allows non-technical people to access the technology in an easy-to-use, conversational interface.
- ChatGPT is a very powerful tool, but works differently than other applications you may have used before. You’re taking the first step today by learning how to best use ChatGPT at work!

- “Prompting” = chatting
- Think of prompting ChatGPT like chatting with a human assistant. It will give you a better answer on the first try if you provide it with more details like an explicit task (what you want it to do), context (additional information you’d like it to know), and expected output (what you want it to respond with).
- There is no perfect way to prompt. Experiment with what works for you!

- Upload files to ChatGPT by clicking on the + icon next to your chat
- You can also use apps to connect to file storage applications like Google Drive or OneDrive – we’ll cover apps in ChatGPT 102, but you can read more about them here.

Key ideas
- You can upload spreadsheets into ChatGPT and have ChatGPT handle the analysis for you.
- Simply ask ChatGPT to analyze the data, or ask specific questions about the data. Treat ChatGPT like a personal analyst.
- You can ask ChatGPT to create visualizations like charts and graphs by just asking it in chat!

- You can search the web with ChatGPT to access the most up-to-date resources. This helps supplement ChatGPT’s existing training data.
- ChatGPT may choose to search the web for you, depending on your prompt, but you can ensure it uses web search by using the + tools
- You can click into the sources that ChatGPT is using in its response.

- ChatGPT has many use cases for work, but it’s starting with writing, brainstorming, research, coding, and data analysis can help get you comfortable with the basic functionality
- Think about your day-to-day and think about things you do a lot, things you want to get better at, and things you are avoiding
- You can ask ChatGPT how to use it better by just asking it! It knows a lot about itself

- Ensure you have a “human in the loop” and ensure that you are reviewing all of ChatGPT’s outputs
- Don’t use ChatGPT as a final resource for legal, medical, or financial advice.
- Your organization might have a formal AI policy that dictates what is/isn’t allowed.
